Panelists at the ONC Tech Forum on Monday advised mapping the functions of health information exchanges to "confidentiality, integrity and availability."
While the APIs mandated by the 21st Century Cures Act will eventually enable a more "seamless experience" across the care continuum, he said, state health information exchanges have a crucial role to play in coordinating pandemic response right now.
The report cited associated costs, technological hiccups, the need for more community partners and training deficits as hurdles.
Much of the worldwide spending increase on APIs, data integration, analytics and more will be driven by governmental regulations and policy requirements, analysts said.
The agency will accept suggestions for new data classes for the United States Core Data for Interoperability, via its new ONDEC system, through Oct. 9.
The new project will build a global information knowledge platform to help the healthcare industry deliver more efficient care to COVID-19 patients.

The report offers best practices and advice – around software, data-governance, legal and ethical considerations and more – for four key research areas: clinical data, omics practices, epidemiology and social sciences.
“We need the integration of traditional healthcare and digital healthcare … integrate public and private sectors together, so we can solve problems more effectively,” said Dr Surangkana Techapaitoon, deputy CEO of Samitivej and BNH Group of Hospitals.
The collaboration with Health Care Service Corporation, billed as Epic's first such project with a payer organization, will help health plans more easily review data for managing claims and prior authorization.
