Nurse practitioners are being asked to do more and more in the healthcare delivery process. And like physicians, they have to deal with the impacts of healthcare information technology every day. And today that includes booming artificial intelligence.
Someone who knows this all too well is Stephen Ferrara, DNP, president of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and associate dean for AI at Columbia University School of Nursing. He interacts with nurse practitioners and with nursing AI every day.
He is the guest on this week's HIMSSCast. He addresses how artificial intelligence technologies and tools are impacting nurse practitioners.

Talking points:
- What is drawing nurse practitioners to artificial intelligence?
- Ferrara: "We're not talking about driverless cars, where AI is in control." What is the role of AI and the role of NPs?
- Nurse practitioners are exploring the potential of AI to review patient data from wearable devices to quickly spot changes that may signify a change in health status. How can this help and how do NPs use the AI in these cases?
- Ferrara personally has tested some of these AI tools and says he has found them to be very beneficial and will improve patient outcomes. How so? And what are the benefits beyond better outcomes?
